So I'm a bassist, what's the deal with chucking the thing away? Do bands employ people as mic stand replacers?

Not sure what you mean. You mean a vocalist who comes out on stage, pulls the mic, and then throws the stand off stage? I never liked a vocalist who didn't use the stand. The best vocalists out there always used the stand, ala David Lee Roth and Rod Stewart.
yes...I know Roth would run without the stand, but he also used it quite often. Add Steven Tyler to the list also.

Kinda Carl,
You're a vocalist right? Walk onstage, chuck it away and let some other fucker go retreive for ya?
Like you didn't know where you threw it? ITS BEHIND YOU (fuckin panto style).

Nah, never chucked a stand. Though most the time I also had a guitar strapped to me, so I kind of needed that stand so people could hear my lovely voice.

Tyler and Stewart were the masters of mic stands. They didn't need no fancy mic stands like Axl or that Korn guy. Seeing Tyler ride the mic stand like a horse ruled.

I'm with Carl....with my short-lived 4week band Candy Gunn.....I needed the mic stand cuz I was also the guitar-player. HAHA...man that band fizzled fast...I can laugh at it now.
